The lifespan of a dollar in the Asian community is 28 days, in the Jewish community the lifespan of a dollar is 19 days, and shockingly, the lifespan in the African-American community is approximately 6 hours. - Brooke Stephens
To comply with my non-disclosure agreement, I have omitted and obfuscated confidential information in this case study. All information in this case study is my own and does not necessarily reflect the views of Blackcents.
It is commonly known throughout the black community that black owned businesses lack a fair shot at success. Most times, it seems that black owned businesses struggle to gain the necessary support from their communities to reach sustainability. While there are a lot of factors that play into this, my client sought to create an application which aided the discovery and sourcing of black owned businesses, making them as easy as possible to discover by the people who want to support.
I started with a few brainstorming and mood boarding sessions where I attempted to put myself in the mind of the user. Based on some of the client’s previous data, we determined there were two main types of users: 1. people who came with a good idea of what business they were looking for, and 2. people who just wanted to support a black business.
As the core screen of the application, we decided the home/search screen needed to address both of these users. I designed a simplified home screen, which included a search bar for those who knew exactly what they wanted and suggestions of business types for those who were just exploring.
One of the most difficult design challenges was determining how we would differentiate between physical businesses and online businesses in the search results. I decided to add an advanced search feature so that people could choose whether they wanted location based physical businesses or non-location based online businesses in their search results. We designed it so that each business included a profile page which shows a few pictures, bio, contact information, website, social media, and location (if it’s a physical business). Also, for monetization, we added paid slots for promoted items in the search results to give businesses a greater opportunity to stand out.
As the single designer on the project, I lead in designing various elements of the brand identity, including the logo and interface. Also, I built out a prototype in inVision for the client to have a clear vision of the product post-development.
Infinite blessings to you and everyone you love!
